Izushi flourished as a castle town during the Edo period under the rule of the Sengoku and later the Matsudaira clans. Unlike many modern cities in Japan, Izushi has preserved its historical charm. The streets are lined with white-walled samurai residences, merchant houses, and Edo-style architecture.
